 getting nowhere slow. (leon)

The day was growing old, the sun was setting in the east and a small breeze blew through the air introducing the cold night that was to come, the trees rustled as their leaves blew over top of each other. The clouds started to cover the sky as the once light sky became dark and eerie looking. The moon came out on the opposite side of the sun, small misty like clouds covered it and rolled across the sky. The breeze had reached a woman that was walking through out the winding trees of a small forest. Her reddish, auburn hair blew past her shoulders and into her face. Pulling an elastic from her wrist, she pulled all of her hair back and into a mid-high pony tail. Claire Redfield had been doing what most people did now and then, something that was never completely original anymore, but she had taken the liberty of her time off to go back packing across Europe. Sure it would take a long time and a lot of patience but she knew she could do it. A large backpack on her back carried a sleeping bag, a tent for those days where there were no buildings around, she had some food in packages but normally she just ate what she found like wild berries or fruit if she managed to find a tree that grew apples but that was rare.

There was a clearing in the trees just ahead, she could hear noise and cars driving by, she had found a highway which meant that there would be a service station or motel near by. Taking a deep breath she trudged up the small hill, looking to either side of her. For a highway the road was pretty empty. Trudging along the side of the road she came to a sign. Lodging was just ahead by a few kilometers. As she started walking again, she heard people yell at her through the windows, and honk there horns. Claire just rolled her eyes and continued on giving them no reaction. Just a bunch of horny teens that finally got there license, or a few older men who were looking for a good time, either way Claire thought it was degrading and would have loved to have pulled her pistol out and take a shot at one of there tires but she didn’t want to draw anymore attention to herself than she was by walking down the side of the highway. The walk seemed to take longer than she had wanted it to but she was fine, after all she was backpacking across Europe and that meant there would be lots of walking and few rides the way she was doing it. It was always good to keep in shape and do something fun at the same time.

As she came to another road that turned to the service station she walked up it following the curves and such until the building actually came into sight. Then it hit her, she had to use the bathroom super bad. Starting into a fast jog she ran through the cars, weaving in and out of them, and pushing through the doors. A few minutes later she came back out and looked around; walking up to one of the food services she looked at the menu and decided a big juicy burger with fries was in call for. Ordering her food she bent over the counter slightly and asked the man if he knew where the closest lodge was. He replied telling her that there wasn’t anywhere until the next town which was miles away. Paying for her food she found a place to sit and eat. She knew that this night called for a camp out. She could start a small fire and that would keep her warm too, her sleeping bag was huge and had fur on the inside. After finishing her food she left and headed to a forested area. About a half hour of walking she found a perfect little clearing and pulled out her tent setting it up, it was one of those old fashioned ones that just had the two poles on either end and had the wide openings. Laying her sleeping bag out she started to look for some twigs to make a fire.

Taking the lighter out of her pocket she held it to the fire until it started a small flame. Sitting back she looked at it and smiled. Of course Claire was going to have something to eat again, this time it was a tasty little treat. Smores. They were always a great treat to have. Digging through her large backpack she pulled out a chocolate bar, a small bag of marshmallows and some graham crackers. A few more minutes passed and she had stuffed herself of at least six. Curling up in her sleeping bag she looked up at the sky and looked at the stars. It had been a long time since she had been in contact with any of her friends, colleagues, or family. She wondered how Chris was doing, and what he was up to now. Leon, well she knew that he’d probably be doing something for the government or on a mission somewhere half way across the world. She missed both of them dearly but she had no way of contacting either of them, having left all of her technology at her apartment, she hated that stuff anyways, she just couldn’t figure it out a lot of the times. Closing her eyes lightly, she felt herself drift into unconsciousness, and into a heavy sleep.

After the kidnapping and subsequent rescue of Ashley Graham, Leon never thought he would be back in Europe; but here he was, under orders from the President to make sure there were no more of the Plagas anywhere else , or left oer from the incident.

Since Chris Redfield's return with Sheva Almoar, there had been questions within the US government about whether or not there were more of these things, and if they should stick their noses into it or not. But after Chris's insistance that they be checked out by someone who knew how to handle the situation, the President reluctantly agreed to send one of their top agents out to see what was going on. So, in went Leon.

He honestly didn't think that he would find anything, but he wasn't sure if that was because they really were all gone or if it were just wishful thinking on his part. He had started back in Spain, back to the village where it had all begun. And other than the evil looks he got from poking around and asking questions again he did not see anything inherently evil.

And now, he was in Germany, near The Black Forrest. He had read up about it and the wildlife included Cows, Foxes and the possibility of Horses as well as worms. But not the typical worm..... He hoped if he did come across anything zombie esque that it would not be a Worm...

Pulling out his handgun and his flashlight since it was late, he walked among the trees. Off in the distance he thought he saw a campfire; so he stated walking in that direction. It was a bit hard to scan everywhere into the thick trees, but he supposed the one good thing was that there would be plenty of cover for him if he needed it.

Focusing on what was ahead of him, he barely registered what he had already seen. Trying to be as quiet as possible he made his way through the trees till he came to the clearing where there was indeed a fire and a woman who had nodded off near it. Debating whether or not to wake the woman up or just keep going and leave her alone, the time of day decided for him. He would need somewhere to stay the night and if he had learned anything from his previous missions as well as Raccoon City, that there were safety in numbers.

"Hey there, sorry to wake you up, but do you mind if I stay here for the night?" Leon asked, he wasn't sure but he thought .... waitasecond. "Claire?"

Her sleep felt just as good as it would have on a bed. Being covered in that giant sleeping bag that was lined with fur, it felt even better than a bed ever would. It had a built in pillow at the top and was very spacious. She felt herself just drift into a deep sleep without any interruptions from animals, humans or even insects. As the redheaded woman slept, small sighs of comfort escaped her lips as she lay there. The fire seemed to be dying down now; it was still giving off enough hot air to keep her warm though, as though the sleeping bag already wasn’t though. Her hand laid under her head, her hair covered her face except a small bit of her cheek that was exposed to the light of the fire. In the glow her skin gave off a porcelain glow. She looked almost fragile as she lay there. Turning over onto her other side, she felt a small gust of wind sweep through her sleeping bag giving her chills. This was what it was all about though, back packing through Europe, experiencing everything there was to experience, that meant the great outdoors, the weather no matter if it was hot or cold out, just getting the full understanding of what Europe was about and what it was like. Claire was on her third day, going on her fourth and she was already appreciating everything that she had seen, the wildlife that she came into encounter with, the people were quite friendly to her, and some were too friendly, she stayed away from them though.

Her sleep was suddenly broken by a sound of something running fast. Her eyes shot open as she laid there. Not knowing whether to get up or not, whatever it was was running in the opposite direction of her. She felt some what relived but wasn’t sure if she was trust whatever it was not to come back. She lay in her sleeping bag and waited a few more minutes before shutting her eyes again and falling to sleep, though with the worries on her mind now of what could be in the area, it was a light almost uncomfortable one. The ground seemed to become bumpier to her, the air was cold and nothing was helping keep it warm, the fire seemed to die out even more and the smoke blew towards her, covering her mouth and nose so she would inhale it or cough bringing back the wild animal to her attention. Her eyes fluttering slightly as she accepted sleep to overcome her once again. Tossing and turning as her mind took her into a dream of some sorts. As it went on, it took her back to Arklay facility. It was an instant replay of the events that had taken place there, except it just kept on replaying the death of Steve Burnside. Over and over again, tears rolled down the cheeks of the sleeping girl as the nightmare went on. After about ten times of the replay, her eyes shot open again. It was one of those dreams where it wouldn’t let you escape, wake up, but she fought it.

Her eyes starred up at the starry sky. Wiping her tear stained face, she sighed and sat up in her sleeping bag. “Maybe chocolate before going to sleep isn’t a good idea.” The woman said to herself. Holding her knees close to her chest she looked around her. It seemed to have gotten colder. Looking around once more, she got up and walked into the woods, but not to far. She grabbed a few more pieces of wood that she could find and placed them on the fire hoping to get it to burn brighter again. With no luck, she rummaged through her bag for the lighter again. Flicking it on, she attempted to light the fire. It wasn’t until she heard a loud noise, it sounded like a car horn. Perhaps someone was just warning and animal to get off the road, or out of the way. She didn’t want to think it was anything else, not to get herself all worked up, thinking that she was going to be hunted or killed for sleeping on private property, she hadn’t seen any signs that said it was so she knew she was safe. The noise stopped and Claire was hoping to see a dear or moose run by her but there was nothing. The only sound was of the leaves being blown in the wind. Her eyes turned back to the fire that was now lit, she pulled her hand away and lay back down in her sleeping bag hoping to get some more sleep. It had to of been at least three thirty or four in the morning. She exhaled noisily before readjusting herself into a more comfortable position.

Her silent sleep had once again been ruined by another noise yet again, this time it was a person. Her eyes closed still, she felt around for her knife. If this person was playing a trick on her, she would give him quite a scare herself. The voice sounded hurt almost, Claire sat up and rubbed her eyes looking around to find the person, grabbing her knife from her side she crawled out of the tent cautiously. Standing up her eyes caught a tall man. She replayed the voice in her head, over and over and put it to the man that was in front of her. Almost instantly she dropped the knife and lunged herself at the man with a big grin on her face. “LEON? I can’t believe it’s you!” Hugging her old partner as tight as ever, she had missed him. Leon S. Kennedy, he was here? The odds were so slim but she accepted them anyways. Letting go of him, she looked at him with a big smile on her face. "What are you doing here?" she asked curiously. She lead him over to her sleeping bag and sat down on it, grabbing his hand and giving him a slight tug to come and join her down on it.

No sooner had Claire hugged him than she was already coaxing him over to sit with her on her sleeping bag. She wanted to know why he was there; what he was doing. She knew he was an agent, and she had fought zombies before-and recently.

It couldn't hurt to have a partner in this one; and he could claim he hadn't told her anything-the government knew about Claire as well as they did Chris and while she was not part of any official resistance against Umbrella, they would possibly look the other way in her case.

"There's no sense lying to you. I wish I could call this a social visit, but I was sent back to Europe to mke sure the Plagas were really gone. To make sure that Saddler's remnants were all wiped out. And i've been given the authority to wipe out any other Bio Weapon that I see. I'll need to talk to your brother if I run into anything; because he'll need to know about it."

Leon purposefully left out the we instead of I, not wanting to involve her anymore than she already was, but also knowing that if she insisted on joining up with him there was not much that he could do about it. He did want the help; but he did not want to have something happen to her, though he knew from past experiences that she could indeed take care of herself. It was just that the Ganados and the Majini that Chris and Sheva Alomar fought looked so much like humans that it would be hard for her to tell until it was too late. But who was to say there were anymore?

He hadn't run into any yet....

"I could ask you the same thing Claire, what are you doing by yourself in Germany?" Leon asked with a smirk

Claire grinned up at her old partner, the two had not talked to each other in such a long time, but nothing was strange or awkward because she knew that he was busy with the government, and stuff but it wouldn’t have hurt to send a letter, or leave a message saying he was okay, or just to say hi or something! She wasn’t going to be mad at him for it; she wasn’t the type of person to hold a grudge for something so small. She watched him for a moment, he looked tired. She waited for him to join her down on her sleeping bag and then rested her hands on her knees almost in a meditating way. As she listened to him answer her question, she nodded her head every now and then to show that she was still paying attention to him and not drifting into a sleep. Claire had grown tired, she had interrupted sleep the whole night, but she was okay that it was Leon that woke her, she wasn’t sure if it would have been some sort of killer or wild animal that was hungry and looking for some human flesh to satisfy its needs.

Claire was happy that Leon wasn’t going to lie to her; he didn’t need to… ever. Claire was always an understanding person and if he was on a mission she wasn’t going to object to it. “So, do they always send you on missions alone?” She asked him curious. It seemed that Leon was always on his own except for the times that Claire joined him or they met randomly like this. Claire had heard of the Plagas virus but she had never had to experience it herself and she had never seen what it looked like either. She belonged to a small organization called Terrasave, they weren’t very big yet and didn’t get much information unless they went to look for it themselves or questioned other people. “Chris?” she said. Her brother was… well she had no idea where he was, and she was worried about him, wondering what he could possibly be doing now. She didn’t want to get herself to worked up about it though, she had company, well… what you could call it, she was sure that Leon would be leaving in the morning unless Claire said something, or offered to cook him up some breakfast on the fire.

Me?” she asked again, it wasn’t as though there was anyone else around her, or the two of them. She smiled again, “Well, there wasn’t much going on over in America as far as I’m concerned and I just took the opportunity to do a little trip. I figured backpacking across Europe would be fun.” Claire admitted, as far as she was concerned, she felt lonely, she hadn’t brought any technology with her, and she had just come to enjoy the nature. “No technology, no anything. Just me and the wilderness.” She added. Moving her hands around, she felt her hand rub over her sleeping bag then she glanced back at Leon. "How long have you been out here?"

Leon decided to concede and sit next to Claire as he listened to her talk. This might be the only time they got to talk in a relatively peaceful manner in a while; though odds were they both would need to catch some sleep if they wanted to be functional later in the day.

He listened to her and decided to wait until she was through before answering her questions, or asking more of his own.

"Normally, yeah. I'm not always totally alone. Since the Plagas incident and the airport i've been assigned closer back-up should I need it, but it is usually a one agent at a time thing. Though they did promote Hunnigan and she does intel for me and supplies me." Leon was honest about what was going on, but he would have to keep a tighter lip on some of his missions because friend or not, there were some things the President would not want him to reveal that he had been doing.

"Yes, you men you haven't spoken to him since he came back?" Leon asked innocently.

Leon could understand just wanting to get away occassionally but that seemed to be a luxury he just could not afford at this point. In order to keep Sherry safe all thoe years ago he had had to make a deal; an that deal had become a career. A career that never ended. He was a Mission hopper and had trained hard to become one of the top agents in the world; that didn't make it any less lonely for him however.

"I can understand that. Sometimes it is good to get away, even when you don't have any Snickers......." Leon decided to joke. "About a month; give or take a few days. Whata bout you?"

While waiting for Claire to answer Leon slung off his backpack and stood up and moved over to the right of Claire's sleeping bag and took his out of the pack and unrolled it. It wasn't anything special but he didn't need it to be. After a while, you were able to sleep anywhere and wake up almost immediately. He then checked his handguns; first the Kendo and then the Glock. Then he re holstered them and pulled out a Whet Stone from his pack and started to sharpen his knife with it. The knife hit the stone and each time made a 'Chink'

As Leon sat down next to her, she couldn’t help but smile. She missed Leon, she missed everyone, Sherry who she had promised to visit after she and Leon had saved her. Claire had just got herself into a lot of work, and then when it had disappeared and she had time to herself she never forgot she just wasn’t sure where to start. She waited in silence after she had finished talking and waited for Leon to answer her question for him.

Claire had always noticed that Leon was alone most of the time. She hadn’t heard about a lot of the missions he went on but she was sure that it was top secret stuff. She wasn’t sure if she was going to ask him but took a deep breath and decided to anyways. “Well, would you mind some company on your trip?” she asked with an innocent smile. Working with Leon was always fun, even though it was never really on good times. “So you’ve been doing well in other words?” Claire had never got the chance to meet Hunnigan but she was sure that the woman knew what she was doing and from what little Leon did say she sounded like she knew what she was doing.

Claire shook her head, small strands of loose hair falling into her face. “No I haven’t. I don’t know where he is or what he’s been doing.” Claire admitted. Did it sound bad that she hadn’t taken the time to contact her brother? She didn’t know what he was up to, or if he was even alive. It worried her not knowing what he was doing. Claire felt bad for not telling or calling him that she was back; and then again he was always leaving her and never contacting her for long periods of time. She wondered if he wondered where she was or if she was okay.

I may not have snickers but I did just get a huge burger and fries, which by the way was delicious.” She grinned happily at Leon. She thought about it, she wasn’t sure how long exactly she had been out in the wilderness. Thinking for about a minute she finally opened her mouth to speak. “About a month. I’ve already covered a lot of ground.” She had brought her camera with her and had taken a handful of pictures, she was lucky that she had bought a new memory card or else she would have run out of room already. She watched as he checked his guns and watched as he sharpened his knife.

Well, she had asked if she could come with him. He wasn't sure if he should let her, but at the same time he knew he couldn't stop her. So, he'd have to make sure she was safe or Chris would kill him and used to Leon figured he'd have a shot against Chris, but not so much anymore.

"Okay. It's not gonna be a vacation though and there might be things I won't be able to tell you. But yeah, it'd be good to have you along."

"I've been pretty ok, yeah. Nothing to write home about just yet. You're the first friendly face i've seen since the Airport. I've had one mission after another....." Leon trailed off, relaying the fact he'd been busy but not specifying what exactly. "Really. Well, when you can you might want to touch bases with him, pretty sure he'd want to know that you're in Europe. Especially since your last trip wasn't so relaxing."

Leon wasn't trying to be a jerk, or too fatherly, but he was trying to be a good friend and just in case they did find something, the more people they had to help the better.

"Yeah, he'll wanna know that you're in Europe. And nice one. I'll be heading more towards Berlin tomorrow, but we have to get out of these woods first. There are some nasty things in here; did you do any research before your backpacking?"

Claire beamed with the response that Leon gave her she was quite happy that he would let her come along with him. She nodded her head, she understood that he wasn’t going to be able to tell her everything, after all he did work for the government and she knew that she was going to have to respect his wishes but she was sure that she was going to get some information from him. “Leon, you know that I’m not going to treat it like any vacation. It’d be good to come along with you.” She replied, to the man that sat in front of her.

That’s good. Really? Well I guess it’s not likely that you’re coming to a whole new country and expect to know someone or find someone you know there.” Claire told him a bit sarcastically. It seemed that the two of them were just lucky to find each other here. “At least it’s keeping you busy.” Claire added. Sighing, she knew Chris would probably love to hear that she was alright, but when she did try to call him, she never got an answer, she left many messages but never got any calls returned or messages. “I guess I can just keep trying. I’m sure I’ll get a hold of him sooner or later.” Claire said with a slight hint of disappointment in her voice.

Claire raised her eyebrows at him. “What do you mean nasty things?” she asked with concern in her voice. She looked around the surrounding area. “No, I didn’t do much, just for all the big tourist destinations.” She added quickly. She gave Leon a strange look. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to know what was lurking in the woods. She felt a slight eerie sensation rise in her body as she waited to hear what was here, in the woods.

"I know Claire, was just saying that in case you did just want to sightsee; with me there will be come chance for that, but it might not be how you want it to be." Leon said, partly giving her an out if she really wanted it, but knowing she wouldn't.

"This may be an odd question, but have you heard from Sherry at all? I haven't heard from her since we got her out of Raccoon and I made the deal to keep her safe......" Leon trailed off a little, wondering how sherry had fared.

"There might still be some of Wesker's toys in the forest, part of why i'm here is to look for more. And, even without any infected there are big ass worms out here. I can't say that I really want to make their acquaintance."

She propped herself up on her hands as she leaned back. Her eyes wandered off to the darkness that surrounded them. Glancing back to Leon as his voice had hit her ears. “Trust me, I know.” She gave him an assuring smile, she knew that she wasn’t going to be seeing what she wanted to see, and it was going to be the darker parts of Europe probably. “I’ve seen a lot of stuff already so far.” Claire wasn’t going to give up a chance to work along side Leon again, he was a great partner, and the two of them seemed to be able to get through anything together, maybe with only a few scratches or bruises, she knew she could always count on him though to help her. “Besides, there hasn’t been too much action going on here, and I feel the need for some.” She smirked as she adjusted herself. The fire was still burning a little bright, making the shadows on their faces, Leon looked tired, and Claire knew that she was herself. Bringing her hand up to her mouth, she covered it as a small yawn escaped her mouth. “Excuse me…” She said quietly as she moved her hand back down to loosen the weight from the one hand that held her up.

Her eyes widened slightly, Sherry? Claire had promised to come find her after the whole Raccoon ordeal was over with. She sighed and looked at Leon and then down at the ground. “No I haven’t.” Claire said, she felt bad, she had so much time on her hands and she didn’t even attempt to find Sherry, she was on a vacation and she didn’t try to contact her. Her heart sank at the thought; it had been a few years now. “I hope she’s doing alright.” Claire said to herself more than to Leon. Her eyes held sadness that hadn’t been seen in them for a long time. ‘Where are you Sherry?’ she asked to herself in her head. She hoped she was doing alright and was safe, out of any harms way. Her eyes wandering to her feet that were tucked up underneath her. Brushing a piece of hair out of her eyes she looked back at Leon. “I need to find her.” Claire knew that she had made a promise to her as well as Leon had. Claire never broke them, she wouldn’t start, and she wouldn’t ever. Crossing her arms over her chest, she tried to push a smile to the surface of her face, but only a faint flicker happened.

Worms? Did Leon just say giant worms? Claire’s face screwed up in disgust. “That’s just great.” She said sarcastically. “I guess its good you came out here then; I’d probably be eaten by one of them.” She joked. Claire was actually thankful that Leon at least knew what was lurking out here. Nodding her head, Claire wasn’t sure if she wanted to see one of them either. A heavy wind blew at the tent, making the fabric ripple. Peaking out one end of it, she looked around as though expecting to see an infected person, or a giant worm. Luckily she kept one pistol in the bottom of her bag. So that’s why he was down here, doing a clean sweep of whatever was left from Wesker down here. Claire didn’t even know that there was still some down here; she had thought they got all cleaned up. “Well let’s hope there aren’t too many left. It would make our job that much easier.” Claire smiled, she knew it would make their job to easy, as in there was never going to be a time where there wasn’t a lot of something because it would just be a joke. She looked back at Leon and smiled faintly.

Leon took in everything Claire had to say. She always seemed to have a level head and she didn't freak too much at the potential of Giant Worms. Wondering about Sherry still, he hoped he or someone in the Government could look something up. Maybe it was something he could ask Hunnigan to look into. It was a thought at least.

"Well, the good news is that we will have back up if we need it. I have Hunnigan on stand by in case we need anything." Leon responded to Claire.

"And don't worry, we will find her. And she will be safe, i'm just not sure when that'll be. But I can see if anyone knows where she is now." Leon at least hoped that he had the pull to find Sherry again after all these years.
